Chapter 7

A return to prime-time activism: Social movement theory and the media

Des Freedman

Introduction

There is a hierarchy within social movement theory related to media activism where some methods, objectives, and priorities appear to carry more weight and are more passionately pursued than others.

Let us consider this claim in the light of the very comprehensive definition of media activism provided by Hoynes that sees activism as composed of interlocking fields:

Media activists seek to change both the structure and content of mainstream media, and they use a wide variety of tactics to alternately woo and pressure journalists, call public attention to the failures of mainstream media, build public support for policies aimed at promoting diversity in media ownership and content, and support alternative media across the range of media platforms.1
